About The Book

Black American Voices is a unique collage of narratives, photographs, and works of art that celebrates our shared culture, values and emotions. Black American Voices celebrates the ties that bind humanity. The narratives speak truths about legacy, success, faith, soul food, entrepreneurship, family, skin tones, the arts, hair, sexuality, music, Barack Obama, and more.

The narratives are the result of conversations and interviews the editor, Joe Barry Carroll, has had over the years with family, friends, and others. The photographs were gathered from the photo albums and archives of families of African descent living in America. The narratives and photographs are joined by art from the Antonio and Betty Zamora Collection of African Art.

The selections are as delicious as a box of chocolates. The prose is as immediate as flash fiction.

It’s a gem of a book that comes onto our shelves only once in a while and it is rightly treasured when it does.

Director, West Lafayette Public Library

A book that quite extraordinarily puts together three very different layers of all of our lives.

Joe's unique decision to juxtapose the artifacts with contemporary pictures and stories is genius!
